Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory herb that’s been used for centuries to treat a variety of ailments. This root, which is a cousin to ginger, is native to Southeast Asia and sometimes called "Indian Saffron" because of its beautiful golden color. Turmeric’s active compound, curcumin, has been shown in studies to have disease-fighting potential and great health benefits.

A recent study in  American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry demonstarted evidence that that curcumin can protect the brain.

In this new study, Dr. Gary Small, at the University of California, Los Angeles, and staff tested the compound on adults age range 50-85, with  mild memory problems.

Results showed that the subjects who took curcumin twice daily showed an almost 30% percent improvement in memory tests over the course of the study, but those who took the placebo showed no significant improvements. Not only improved memeory, but hey also experienced improvement in mood.
