Stevia - the sweet salvation from sugar

Stevia - the sweet salvation from sugar

Stevia is a sweetener and sugar substitute extracted from the leaves of the plant species Stevia rebaudiana. Stevia's taste has longer duration than that of sugar. The Stevia leaves have been used traditionally for hundreds of years in South America to sweeten local teas and medicines.

Stevia is actually a plant.

The plant gets its sweetness from naturally occurring glycosides. Stevia became popular in U.S. natural foods and health food industries, as a non-caloric natural sweetener for teas and weight-loss blends.

The use of stevia sweeteners as replacements for sugar benefits people with diabetes, children, and people wanting to lower their intake of calories. In its initial form, Stevia was sold as a ground powder of the stevia plant leaves. Though sweet, the powder also had a bitter aftertaste.
Stevia’s sweet taste and all-natural origins make it a popular sugar substitute. The sweet-tasting compounds in the leaves known as glycosides are extracted, dehydrated, and purified. The result is an extracted, plant-based sweetener

Although Stevia can be helpful to anyone, there are certain groups who are more likely to benefit from its remarkable sweetening potential.
These include diabetic patients, as we have mentioned, those interested in decreasing caloric intake, and children. Stevia is a small perennial shrub that has been used for centuries as a bio-sweetener and for other medicinal uses such as to lower blood sugar. Its white crystalline compound (stevioside) is the natural herbal sweetener with zero calories and is over one hundred times sweeter than table sugar. We love it.

If you grow your own plant, it is a good choice for the herb garden because of the natural, calorie-free sweetness found in its leaves - use the fresh leaves during the growing season to sweeten tea. The sweetness in the leaves is approximately one-fourth as concentrated as the white, powdered stevia sold at the store.
